Description
This art piece is part of the "Tuning In Part 2" series. Guami'ke'ni (Lord of Earth and Water) honors Taino mythology. The Taino were an indigenous precolumbian group that inhabited parts of the Caribbean particularly the Bahamas and Greater Antilles which include Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. According to history, "Guami'ke'ni" was also the name given to Christopher Columbus innocently by the Taino people when he first appeared before them unexpectedly in 1492. The dark sequence of events that led to the decline of the Taino as well as other indigneous groups of the Caribbean has always fascinated me as a person of Afro/Latino - Caribbean descent. This portrait is an interpretation of how the Taino may have innocently perceived Columbus as a god-like figure.
